What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment in a calm, intentional way. With the Keystone Program, Mindfulness is used to help settle the nervous system, reduce mental overload, and improve awareness of thoughts, emotions, and sensations without becoming overwhelmed by them.

The Science Behind It

in today’s fast-paced world, many people spend much of their day in a heightened sympathetic nervous system state, constantly doing, reacting, and problem-solving. When the nervous system remains in this “go” mode for too long, focus, emotional regulation, and mental clarity begin to suffer.

Mindfulness practices support nervous-system regulation by intentionally activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s calming and settling response. Through guided awareness, integrated breathwork, and simple grounding activities, Mindfulness helps the body slow down, settle, and return to balance, reducing mental overload and stress reactivity.

Why It Matters

When the nervous system stays activated for too long, attention, emotional regulation, and clarity begin to suffer. Mindfulness matters because it gives the nervous system consistent opportunities to slow down and recover, supporting steadier responses to daily stress.

The Mindful 5

  1. 1 5 – See Notice five things you can see around you. Let your eyes rest on each one for a moment.
  2. 2 4 – Feel Notice four things you can physically feel. This might be your feet on the floor, your clothing, or the surface you’re sitting on.
  3. 3 3 – Hear Listen for three sounds. They can be near or far, loud or soft.
  4. 4 2 – Smell Notice two scents. If you don’t notice any, take a slow breath and observe the natural scent of the space around you.
  5. 5 1 – Taste Notice one taste. This could be what’s in your mouth or the feeling of your breath as it moves in and out.

This is just one of many techniques you will learn in the full Keystone Program.
